The ORBERA® Solution for Weight Loss
A new and very effective weight loss solution is now available at our clinics: It is known as the ORBERA® Intragastric Balloon System.
This is a weight loss system that works by creating space with a gastric balloon in the stomach so that the patient does not overeat.
This is helpful in maintaining portion control and starting on new eating habits.
It is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, which can be done very quickly. If you choose to lose weight via the Orbera, here is what to expect:
During the Orbera Procedure
The patient is placed under mild sedation. The deflated balloon is then inserted into the stomach. Once inside, a sterile solution fills the balloon up, allowing it to expand. The result is a feeling of fullness.
Using an inserted camera (or endoscope), the physician can monitor the entire procedure. After about 30 minutes, the patient can already return home.
After the Process and During Recovery
The balloon only remains in the body for a few months (most expect up to six), after which it is removed, also non-surgically.
What follows is a program to help patients effectively lose weight and keep it off. They will learn how to form better eating habits and maintain their new weight. They will also get help from a food coach for learning which foods are best during this period and how to adjust meal portions.
Risks and What to Expect Afterward
There may be some gastric discomfort immediately after the procedure. Other common symptoms are nausea and vomiting. These usually last only a few days following balloon placement. The abdomen may feel heavier than usual; this is normal. There is also some risk of back and abdominal pain, or indigestion during the following days. Patients may experience some gastro-oesophageal reflux symptoms.
Anyone who chooses to undergo Orbera should carefully follow all doctor’s recommendations, keeping in close communication with their physician in case any discomfort follows.
The most significant benefit is of course weight loss. In the long term, a person learns how to improve and control their eating habits, helping them journey on a healthier path to an ideal weight and lifestyle.
If you have any further questions about the Orbera procedure, we would be happy to answer them.
