Endoscopy
What is upper endoscopy?
In an upper endoscopy, Dr. Narvaez uses an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube containing a miniature camera and light source, to view your upper digestive system in detail. You may need an upper endoscopy to diagnose conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and GERD.
In addition to examining the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of the small intestine, Dr. Narvaez can use an upper endoscopy to collect a small tissue sample for a biopsy, remove polyps or other growths, and perform other minor corrections.
What is capsule endoscopy?
In a capsule endoscopy, you swallow a small capsule. Inside the capsule is a tiny camera that captures images within your digestive tract. The camera works for eight hours as it travels through your digestive tract, sending images to a small recorder that you wear on your waist.
Dr. Narvaez examines those images to find the location and source of any inflammation, bleeding, or other gastrointestinal problems. A capsule endoscopy can help diagnose inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and precancerous polyps.
What is endoscopy with banding?
Endoscopy with banding is a procedure in which Dr. Narvaez uses an endoscope to deploy a small band and fix it around a varix, a dilated esophageal vein that’s bleeding. This band cuts off the vein’s blood supply, which leads to its retraction and an end to your bleeding episodes.
You may need a series of endoscopy with banding sessions to adequately control bleeding for the long term.
You may also need this procedure if you have symptoms of a ruptured varix, including blood in your vomit, stomach pain, or bloody stool.
What is endoscopy with PEG placement?
In an endoscopy with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), Dr. Narvaez places a flexible feeding tube into your stomach using an endoscope. He can also replace an old or clogged feeding tube using this method.
You may need an endoscopy with PEG if you're unable to take medication, fluids, or nutrition orally due to severe gastrointestinal disease, stroke, or other problems.
